327-404 Organisational Change

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should:

  • demonstrate an understanding of theories of change (and continuity) in organisations at each of the three major levels of analysis: individual, group and organisation;

  • compare and contrast different approaches to organisational change and development;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the issues involved in applying these theories and approaches to current cases in change management, and to their own experiences.

Content:

This course will examine the links between the theoretical bases of change and its practice in organisations. Emphasis will be placed on the interdependence of individual, group and organisational change. At the individual level, topics may include adult development and learning, transitions, careers and competencies. Group dynamics and task group development will be included in the analysis of group change. At the organisational level, different typologies and theories of change will be compared and integrated through topics such as leadership and membership in change, culture and climate, and organisational learning. Approaches to organisational change management will include organisation development, action research, process and management consulting. Current applied issues will include topics of interest to seminar participants.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester examination (60%) and class assignments of no more than 2000 words (40%).
