327-308 Industrial Relations

Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • describe the nature of industrial relations and the structure of labour markets in Australia;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of theories of the employment relationship and industrial relations; and

  • critically analyse developments in theory and policy in industrial relations.

Content:

This course will provide an overview of the Australian labour market and industrial relations systems. It considers developments in industrial relations theory and practice. Topics covered will include: change and transformation in industrial relations in the unionised sector; industrial relations practices in the non-union sector and small businesses; the history and role of unions; the future of unionism; employer strategy and human resource management; employer associations; industrial relations reform; the form and function of state and federal industrial legislation; enterprise bargaining; women in the workplace; industrial conflict; occupational health and safety; and industrial democracy.

Assessment:

A 2-hour end-of-semester examination (70%) and assignments totalling 2500 words (30%).
