316-463 Development Economics

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of current theories of development economics;

  • judge the usefulness of development economics in describing the process of development;

  • extend their knowledge of development economics via independent study and by taking advanced subjects dealing with theory and policy in this area.

Content:

The subject will cover development economics. The topics covered may include economic growth theory including models in which growth is endogenous, exchange rate regimes and optimal currency areas in the developing world, trade and development, financial markets, capital mobility and public solvency, income distribution and human capital.

Assessment:

A 3 hour examination (80%) and class assignments totalling approximately 3000 words (20%).
