316-312 Macroeconomics

Note:

This subject is one of the four subjects which students proceeding to an honours degree in Economics are required to take in either the third or fourth year of their course, and has been designed accordingly. There are, however, no restrictions on entry to the subject which all third-year economics students are welcome to take.

316-201 Intermediate Macroeconomics and 316-202 Intermediate Microeconomics.

Three hours of seminars, lectures and tutorials a week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • extend their knowledge of macroeconomics via the independent study of books and articles dealing with theory and policy in this area and by taking advanced subjects dealing with these matters;

  • judge the usefulness and the limitations of existing theory in the area of macroeconomics.

Content:

Current analysis, and its development, in relation to cycles, growth, and short-term stability; policy problems and applications. Special attention will be given to open economy macroeconomic analysis.

Assessment:

A 2-hour examination (80%) and class assignments totalling approximately 2000 words (20%).
