306-464 Advanced Information Systems

Objectives:

On completion of this subject a student should:

be able to write competent, integrative summaries of the theories and research findings in each of following topics relevant literature:

  • research frameworks in information systems;

  • research methods in information systems;

  • diffusion of information systems (IS)/information technology (IT);

  • impacts of IS on decision-making: decision support systems;

  • user-involvement in IS development;

  • alternative system development approaches;

  • information system development methodologies;

  • organisational impacts of IS/IT;

  • the user interface: colour, graphics;

  • economics and information systems;

  • accounting transaction processing systems;

  • strategic impact of IT.

Content:

A readings-based introduction to the Information Systems (IS) literature for honours and diploma students. The IS frameworks literature, the notion of 'success' in IS (the dependent variable in many research studies), the behavioural and individual differences literature, organisation theory literature, the literature on building effective IS, and the literature on the strategic implications of Information Technology.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester take-home examination (80 %); class presentations and summaries of readings (10%); class participation (10%).

A reading list will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
