300-402 Superannuation and Retirement Income Schemes

Three hours a week of lectures and/or seminars

Objectives:

On completion of this subject a candidate should be able to:

  • explain the purpose of retirement income systems;

  • discuss the range of systems in existence around the world;

  • explain the advantages and disadvantages of various systems;

  • discuss the social and economic effects of various systems;

  • discuss investment strategies for superannuation funds;

  • discuss the Australian superannuation system in some detail.

Content:

Alternative retirement income structures; design of superannuation systems; legislative alternatives; the effects of taxation; equity issues; implications for capital markets.

Assessment:

One two hour examination (80%) and assignments not exceeding 3000 words (20%).
