Women's Studies

The Faculty of Arts offers an interdepartmental program in Women's Studies housed in the Department of History.

The program draws on a core of subjects taught by lecturers in Women's Studies and a wide range of options taught by a number of Departments. Entry to the program will usually be at second-year level. It is possible to complete a major and proceed to Combined Honours in Women's Studies.


Requirements for a Major

A major in Women's studies requires the completion of at least five subjects at second and third-year level, totalling 83.3 points, which must include:

The remaining subjects may be chosen from those listed below. The normal prerequisite for entry to a major in Women's Studies is the completion of 50 points at first-year level (or equivalent). Note that not all subjects are available in each year. Contact the relevant Department for further information.

Entry to Honours

The prerequisite for entry to Women's Studies combined honours is a major in Women's Studies at an overall average grade of H2A or better and admission to honours in another area of study within the Faculty. Prospective Honours Students should also complete a satisfactory thesis proposition form, available from the Convener of the Interdepartmental Program. Prospective Combined Honours students should see the convener during second semester of the year prior to entry into Honours.


Honours requirements

Combined honours in Women's Studies requires the completion of two single-semester Women's Studies seminars selected from subjects listed below (or alternative subjects arranged with the subject coordinator), and two subjects in the combining Department. Students should enrol in the thesis subject in the Department where the thesis will be supervised.
