Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Arts : Music
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are normally permitted to enrol in approved subjects offered by other faculties. However, there is a requirement that students complete the following minimum number of points in departments within the Faculty of Arts:
50 points at first-year;
100 points at second/third-year;
In most cases, students wishing to undertake a major in another faculty will be able to do so, but they will need to plan their course carefully to ensure they meet both departmental prerequisites and Faculty requirements.
Combined course students (except those in the BA/BMus) will not normally be eligible to enrol in any subject(s) in this area of study, please consult a Faculty of Arts Course Adviser for further information.
Students with advanced practical abilities on instruments taught at the Faculty may apply for practical tuition through 740-137 Practical Study 1A. This subject has a quota and requires audition (contact the Faculty of Music Office fore an application form before 15 February, 1997). Acceptance carried with it an obligation to take part in Faculty Orchestra or Choir, and places are offered in instruments where the Faculty has vacancies in its ensembles.
In an Arts degree, other than Practical Study 1A, the area of study within music that is permitted is music history. Introduction to Music 1-1 has no prerequisite and assumes no prior knowledge of music. Arts students who have a background in music may wish to enrol in Music in Society instead which will require them to take the Faculty of Music Musicianship Test to determine whether they have the musical aptitude to complete the subject. This test will be held in Orientation week, February 1997, at the Faculty of Music. Students should register for the test with the Faculty of Music prior to Orientation Week.
The general prerequisite for second and third-year music subjects is successful completion of Music in Society.
The major in Music History has two structures.
Students with no previous musical training commence study in Music by enrolling in 740-138/139 Introduction to Music 1-1 and 1-2, each 12.5 points. Students who pass the Faculty of Music Musicianship Test are exempted from this subject and take Music in Society A and B in their first year for 25 points.
Music in Society A and B are the prerequisite for all other Music History subjects.
The major in Music is undertaken as follows:

First year Introduction to Music 1-1 12.5 Introduction to Music 1-2 12.5 Second year Music in Society A 16.7 Music in Society B 16.7 Third year Three Music history subjects 37.5 One Advanced seminar 12.5 OR Music Techniques 1-1 and Music Techniques 1-2 plus Two Music History subjects 45.0 One Advanced seminar 12.5
