Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Arts : Modern Greek
It is not necessary to have studied Modern Greek before to enrol in first year: there are subjects at Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced levels. However, students must contact the Department before enrolling, in order to determine the language stream or level in which they should enrol. Placement will be based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement text.
Several second and third-year Modern Greek subjects do not have prerequisites.
Graduates of the BA who have majored in Modern Greek have found employment as journalists, interpreters, translators, teachers, librarians and in various areas of the public service, commerce and professions serving the large local Greek community.
Language students are encouraged to spend time in Greece or Cyprus during their studies. A number of scholarships are available, and in certain cases credit may be granted for subjects undertaken overseas.
The Modern Greek major comprises a minimum of five subjects at second and third year level totalling 83.3 points (e. g. five second or third year semester subjects, each worth 16.7 points). The minimum language requirement for a major in Modern Greek is Intermediate Modern Greek B or equivalent. (See also the separate entry for Hellenic Studies in this Handbook).
Honours (fourth year) in Hellenic Studies is a Combined Honours program and can be taken only in conjunction with another Combined Honours program. Many students choose to combine Hellenic Studies with Classical Studies or Ancient Greek. The prerequisites are satisfying the requirements for the BA, a major in Modern Greek (including, if desired, one subject of Greek interest from the Classical Studies program) with an H2A result or better in at least one of these subjects and an overall average grade of H2B or better, and language study to at least Intermediate B level. Students must also meet the Honours Requirements in the combining department.
Honours students enrol in the Honours Seminar in Hellenic Studies (150-462, 16.7 points), an appropriate language subject (16.7 points) and, if their thesis is in Modern Greek, for the Honours Thesis in Modern Greek (150-461, 33.3 points).
