Faculty of Arts

Ancient and Medieval Studies

Convener: Assoc. Professor Anne Gilmour-Bryson (History).

The program offers students a means of developing or extending an interest in Ancient History, Archaeology, Philosophy, and other Classical Studies subjects, as well as the European Middle Ages. The program draws on subjects offered by individual departments, offers coursework in Latin and Ancient Greek and other appropriate languages, and adds other departmental offerings in Classics and Archaeology, English, Fine Arts, History, Music and Philosophy, as well as providing an interdepartmental seminar for fourth-year honours students, and some undergraduate courses.

The program begins at first-year level. Students wishing to complete a mixed major in Medieval Studies, or Ancient Studies, may count any Grade 1 subject as the foundation of this mixed major. Enrolment in Beginners Latin, or Ancient Greek, or any of the first-year units listed below are an excellent preparation for this program.

Prerequisites

Certain departments have first-year prerequisites which must be satisfied for entry to second or third-year. Consult the department in case of doubt. Generally, any first-year Medieval or Ancient Studies subject is acceptable as a background to further study in the area. Check with individual departments for details.

Requirements for a Major

The major in either Medieval or Ancient Studies is at least five subjects successfully completed at second and third-year levels, totalling 83.5 points, chosen from the lists below. As well as completing five subjects, the major in Medieval Studies, or Ancient Studies, requires completion of at least two semesters of language study (consult the departmental entries for further information). If the language requirement was satisfied at first-year, five non-language units must be taken in later years.
