Ibero-American Studies: Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan (La Trobe University)
These subjects are offered as complementary subjects in conjunction with La Trobe University. Special enrolment arrangements apply; students should approach the Arts Faculty Office for details. Spanish 1B, 1C and 2B will be taught at The University of Melbourne, Parkville campus. If student numbers are sufficient, and subject to teacher availability, other classes may also be held at the University of Melbourne Parkville campus. The language stream or level in which a student enrols will be determined by the Department. Placement will be based on the student's VCE results, other language study record or a placement test.
The Spanish Department at La Trobe University provides a comprehensive range of subjects within the general area of Hispanic and Iberian studies, that is, Spanish language, literature and linguistics at a number of different levels; Portuguese language in both its forms (those of Portugal and Brazil, spoken by more than 150 million people); and Catalan, the language of some 7 million Spaniards. Spanish Latin American literature and culture also occupy an important place in the Department's offerings.
A major in Spanish (or Ibero-American Studies for students undertaking Catalan or Portuguese in later years) is only possible for students who commence Spanish study during the first year of their BA. Students commencing Spanish during later years will not be able to complete a major in Spanish or Ibero-American Studies due to the structural constraints of the BA degree.
Studies in Spanish, Portuguese or Catalan cannot be undertaken concurrently with any other Complementary Course language subjects. Students should note that it is not possible to undertake more than two languages for credit towards the BA degree.
Students who wish to satisfy the requirements for a degree with a major in Spanish must complete a total of seven semester units within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University.
Students wishing to continue their studies in Spanish or Ibero-American Studies at La Trobe University must complete two additional second/third year subjects at this University in order to meet the requirements for a La Trobe major. Subjects from various departmental offerings may meet this requirement. Students must gain prior approval from the Chairperson of the Spanish Department at La Trobe University before making their final choice.
Advanced Stream: Students with VCE Spanish or an equivalent qualification must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 1A (at first-year level) and
two semester units of Spanish 2A (at second-year level) and
one semester of Spanish 3AL (at third-year level) and
two additional semester units at second/third-year level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major
two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
Beginners Stream: Students who begin first year with no prior knowledge of Spanish: must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 1B (at first-year level) and
two semester units of Spanish 2B (at second-year level) and
two semester units of Spanish 3B (at third-year level) and
one additional semester unit at second/third-year level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
Intermediate Stream: Students with a prior knowledge of Spanish but without VCE Spanish or an equivalent qualification must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 1C (at first-year level) and
two semester units of Spanish 2C (at second-year level) and
one semester of Spanish 3AL (at third-year level) and
two additional semester units at second/third-level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
Students who wish to satisfy the requirements for a degree with a major in Ibero-American Studies must complete a total of seven semester units within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University as specified below. Students should note that some units are subject to teacher availability and student numbers and may not be offered every year. Any student considering this major must have the approval of the Chairperson of the Spanish Department at La Trobe University. They must follow one of the sequences below:
Students with VCE Spanish or an equivalent qualification must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 1A (at first-year level) and
two semester units of Portuguese 2P (at second-year level) and
two semester units of Portuguese 3PA (at third-year level) and
one additional (non-language) semester units at second/third-year level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.

two semester units of Spanish 1C (at first-year level) and
two semester units of Portuguese 2P (at second-year level) and
two semester units of Portuguese 3PA (at third-year level) and
one additional (non-language) semester unit at second/third-level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
Catalan is also available at either second or third-year level but is not available to students undertaking an Ibero-American Studies major with Portuguese. Students wishing to include Catalan within an Ibero-American Studies major must begin with the appropriate stream of Spanish at first-year level and then one of the following structures:
Students who have completed two semester units of Spanish 1A at first-year level must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 2A (at second-year level) and
two semesters of Catalan 3N (at third-year level) and
one additional (non-language) semester unit at second/third-year level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
Students who have completed two semester units of Spanish 1B at first-year level must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 2B (at second-year level) and
two semesters of Catalan 3N (at third-year level) and
one additional (non-language) semester unit at second/third-year level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
Students who have completed two semester units of Spanish 1C at first-year level must complete the following:
two semester units of Spanish 2C (at second-year level) and
two semesters of Catalan 3N (at third-year level) and
one additional (non-language) semester unit at second/third-level within the Spanish Department at La Trobe University and to complete the requirements of the La Trobe major two semester units at second/third-year level of approved University of Melbourne subjects.
