Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Arts : Hellenic Studies
The University of Melbourne is uniquely equipped to offer a comprehensive programme in Hellenic Studies spanning the four millennia of the continuous linguistic and cultural tradition of Hellenism. The proposed major in Hellenic Studies is designed to give a clearer focus to the underlying diachronic unity of the plethora of subjects of Hellenic interest taught within the Faculty of Arts.
Melbourne claims the largest and most vigorous concentration of Hellenes outside Greece, and by choosing to major in Hellenic Studies graduates will emphasise their capacity to administer knowledgeably to this sizeable community in its diverse manifestations, as well as skills derived from multidisciplinary study of a rich and distinguished tradition of language and culture, fundamental to Western Civilisation.
Any five of the following subjects totalling 83.3 points (Note: Students taking 83.3 points of Modern Greek subjects at SECOND/THIRD-YEAR LEVEL should claim a major in Modern Greek.)
Subjects available for a major
The prerequisite for entry to Honours in Hellenic Studies is completion of a major in Hellenic Studies with an H2A result or better in at least one of these subjects and an overall average grade of H2B or better, and language study to at least Intermediate B level. Students must also meet the Honours Requirements in the combining department.
Honours students enrol in the Honours Seminar in Hellenic Studies (150-462, 16.7 points), an appropriate language subject (16.7 points) and, if their thesis is in Modern Greek, for the Honours Thesis in Modern Greek (150-461, 33.3 points).
