First year: 316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics and 316-102 Introductory Microeconomics and one of either 316-129 Business Statistics or 316-130 Quantitative Methods (12.5 points per subject).

Third year: Four 300-level subjects offered by the Department of Economics (50 points).

Entry to Honours

Students intending to do the honours year in Economics are required to take specific subjects in third-year. Entry to the fourth-year normally requires that students obtain at least an average second class honours result in third year. Students should also have averaged at least second class honours in subjects taken in the Department of Economics in their first two years.

The Faculty of Arts will not admit to the Honours School a candidate who has previously graduated Bachelor of Commerce (honours or ordinary degree).

Third Year (Intending Honours Students)

The prerequisites for acceptance to the third year are 316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics and 316-102 Introductory Microeconomics, 316-201 Intermediate Macroeconomics and 316-202 Intermediate Microeconomics, and either 316-130 Quantitative Methods 1 and 316-206 Quantitative Methods 2 or 316-129 Business Statistics and 316-205 Introductory Econometrics.

Arts students must undertake 50 points of Economics (four subjects), and 50 points in a discipline taught by a budget department of the Faculty of Arts. Provisionally enrolled students in the third year are required to take:

i) 316-313 Microeconomics

ii) 316-301 International Economics

316-312 Macroeconomics

316-316 Basic Econometrics or 316-317 Econometrics

Permission may be granted to substitute other level 3 Economics subjects for up to two of the subjects (except 316-313) listed above. The omitted subjects must then be taken as part of the fourth-year of the honours degree in Economics.

For details of honours enrolment and third-year requirements, please refer to the requirements set out in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce entry in this volume of the Handbook.

Combined Honours Arts Degree - Economics and Department X

Arts honours degree candidates are able to pursue honours courses in which Economics is combined with another discipline taught by a budget department of the Faculty of Arts. The following combined honours courses are available: Economics and History, Economics and Philosophy, and Economics and Political Science. Other combinations may be considered. In all cases, candidates are required to obtain approval from the heads of the departments concerned and the Faculty of Arts.

The third year of the Combined Honours course is as listed under the third-year Provisional Honours enrolment section above. Students must also fulfil the prerequisite requirements for entry to honours in the Arts discipline.

In fourth-year the Economics component of the combined honours course is those subjects listed in sections (i) and (ii) under Fourth-year above. However, when two other level 3 Economics subjects have been substituted for two of the subjects which normally comprise section (ii) of provisional honours enrolment, the subjects that were replaced must normally be included as part of section (ii) in fourth-year. 316-313 may not be deferred to fourth-year.
