Faculty of Arts

English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language Program offers four credit subjects. They are:

145-120 Advanced English as a Second Language 1

145-121 Advanced English as a Second Language 2

145-122 Language Approaches to Australian Literature

145-123 Spoken Interaction

Subjects are available for students of most faculties; however, students should check with their faculty that the subject can be credited toward their course.

Prerequisites

All applicants will be required to sit a test to determine their level of language proficiency before they are able to enrol in this subject. Students who are native speakers of English or whose language proficiency is near-native are not eligible to enrol.

Testing takes place in the two weeks prior to the beginning of semester. You need to contact the Administrative Assistant at the Centre for Communication Skills and English as a Second Language (03 9344 4491) to make an appointment for a test.

If you are unable to take the test at the above time, please contact the Centre as soon as possible to make an alternative arrangement.

Other Information

All other subjects are available for first year students. Students enrolled in an Arts degree may take only one ESL credit subject in first semester, and one subject in second semester.
