Faculty of Arts

Computer Science

The Computer Science program aims to develop skilled computer scientists with the technical background, knowledge, and adaptability to contribute to the development of well-designed, robust, computer-based solutions to a range of problems in business and industry.

You study Computer Science (including introduction to computer programming, algorithms and problem solving, software development) and Mathematics. Subjects available in third year include artificial intelligence, database systems, computer networks, graphics.

At all year levels there is a focus on the cultivation of practical skills together with assimilation of the relevant scientific principles. Teaching methods involve a combination of lectures, tutorials, and practical work. Tutorials are provided at all years.

Computer Science graduates work in government, manufacturing industry, the information industry, commerce, and education. In all types of work environments, whether with small companies or large, government or private industry, success in employment involves a mixture of technical expertise and strong communication skills.

Students taking Computer Science subjects will be required to spend time on practical assignments in addition to lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials.

Details of first and second year subjects are provided below. For details of third year subjects, refer to the descriptions in the entry for the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering section of Volume 4 of the Handbook.


Faculty of Arts Requirements

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are normally permitted to enrol in approved subjects offered by other faculties, such as Computer Science subjects. However, there is a requirement that students complete the following minimum number of points in departments within the Faculty of Arts:

Students wishing to undertake a major in Computer Science will need to plan their course carefully to ensure they meet both Computer Science Department prerequisites and Arts Faculty requirements.

Students undertaking the degree in Computer Science with honours should note that they are required to over-enrol their degree at both second and third-year level in order to complete sufficient subjects for entry to the honours program. Students who are considering entering the honours program should consult with the Department of Computer Science before the end of first-year studies.

Combined course students will not normally be eligible to enrol in any subject(s) in this area of study; please consult an Arts Faculty Course Adviser for further information.


Prerequisites


First Year

Students are advised that a knowledge of VCE Mathematical Methods is assumed.


Second Year

The prerequisite for all second-year level subjects is 433-141 Computing Fundamentals A, 433-142 Computing Fundamentals B and 618-121 Mathematics 1A (prior to 1996, Mathematics 618-101).

Students intending to proceed to third-year combined honours must refer to the description below of the Honours school requirements at second-year level.


Third year

The prerequisites for all third-year subjects include 433-241, 433-242, 433-243 and 433-244 (see below for additional prerequisites).


Requirements for a Major


Ordinary Degree

The course for the ordinary degree in the Department of Computer Science is structured as follows:

First Year

25 points

Students must enrol for and successfully complete:

N. B. Students intending to proceed to second year computer science must also complete 618-121 Mathematics 1A or 618-142 Intermediate Mathematics B.

Second Year

33.3 points

Students must enrol for and successfully complete:

Prerequisites: 433-141, 433-142 and one of 618-121 Mathematics 1A, 618-142 Intermediate Mathematics B, or 618-101 Mathematics 1A (1996 Handbook).

Third Year

50 points comprising

Prerequisites: Either all four of 433-241, 433-242, 433-243 and 433-244 (1996 Handbook), or all three of 433-252, 433-253, 433-254.


Honours Degree

The course for the degree with honours in the Department of Computer Science is structured as follows:

First Year

25 points

Students must enrol for and successfully complete:

Note: Students intending to proceed to second year computer science must also complete 618-121 Mathematics 1A, 618-142 Intermediate Mathematics B, or 618-101 Mathematics 1A (1996 Handbook).

Second Year

41.6 points

Students must enrol for and successfully complete:

Prerequisites: 433-141 Computing Fundamentals A, 433-142 Computing Fundamentals B and one of 618-121 Mathematics 1A, 618-142 Intermediate Mathematics B, or 618-101 Mathematics 1A (1996 Handbook). For entry to the degree with honours, a grade of H2B or better must have been achieved in the subjects 433-141 and 433-142.

Third Year

Students intending to proceed to Computer Science 4 (Honours) must include at least four of 433-303, 433-313, 433-330, 433-332, 433-342, 433-351, 433-361 and 433-380, plus one other 300-level Computer Science or Mathematics subject. Students would normally be expected to also have passes in at least 18 points of 200-level Mathematics or Statistics subjects. Students are advised to consult the Fourth-year Coordinator in the Department of Computer Science to ensure that they complete the necessary prerequisites.

62.5 points (five subjects) chosen from:

and other subjects that meet the approval of the Head of Department and of the Faculty through the Dean of Arts.

Combined Honours courses with Computer Science and other departments may be offered. Students interested in such possibilities should consult the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies) (Arts).


Opportunities for Further Study

Students may proceed to masters level study, either by thesis only, or by coursework and minor thesis.
