Arabic Studies

Arabic is the language spoken by the 180 million Arabs living in the Middle East and in Africa, as well as Arabic communities in many countries around the world including Australia. Arabic is also the international language of Islam which is the religion followed by approximately one-fifth of the world's total population. The Department of Language Studies offers several subjects in Arabic language (from Beginners to Advanced levels), literature, Arab society and culture and Islamic Studies.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the BA who have majored in Arabic Studies have found employment in teaching, translation, journalism, research and in various areas of the public service, commerce and professions serving the large Arab community in Australia.

Prerequisites

Arabic can be taken at beginners, post VCE and more advanced level.

The language stream or level in which a student enrols will be determined by the department. Placement will be based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement test. However, their enrolment will remain provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered in the light of new evidence that might emerge during the first weeks of teaching. As far as possible, changes will be notified in the first two weeks of the semester. Changes in weeks 3 and 4 will have to be reported to the Associate Dean.

Requirements for a Major

A major in Arabic Studies requires the completion of five subjects at second and third-year level (a total of 83.3 points) which must normally include Advanced Arabic 1 Part B.

Entry to Honours
