Prerequisites

Entry into the American Studies major is available from second year.


Requirements for a Major

To complete a major in American Studies requires the completion of at least five subjects at second and third-year level, which must include the core subject 'Contemporary American Society and Culture', together with four subjects selected from the list of second and third year subjects below.

111-255 Genre Study
111-320 Art and Mass Culture in the 1960s

History:
131-256 People in North America, 1780-1890
131-257 People in North America, 1890-1990

Political Science:
166-211 American Politics and Society
166-226 Issues in American Foreign Policy
166-264 Constitutional Design and Change: Australia and America


Entry to Honours

An Honours program in American Studies does not exist at present. Several departments, however, do offer fourth-year subjects with American subject content. These include: Political Science, History, English and Fine Arts. See Political Science Departmental Handbook for further details.
