920-274/374 Advanced Portuguese 2 PA-2/3 PA-2

Introductory Portuguese 2 PA-1/3 PA-1 or an equivalent approved standard.

Four hours per week: one 1-hour lecture, one 1-hour grammar and writing tutorial and one 2-hour practical language class

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should:

  • be able to speak, read and understand Portuguese at an advanced level, in different registers and regional variants; and

  • have a good broad knowledge of the key grammatical structures of Portuguese.

Content:

This subject is set at a higher level than its predecessor and aims at consolidating spoken and written skills by placing a greater emphasis on the socio-historical and cultural context of the Portuguese language in its Brazilian, Portuguese, African and Asian varieties. A wide range of materials will be studied, drawn from cinema, the media, representative writings on Luso-Brazilian history and society, and representative examples of literature from the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Assessment:

Written exercises (35%); one 30-minute class paper (10%); class participation (10%); comprehension, production and transcription exercises (15%); one 1500-word essay (10%); one 2-hour examination (20%).
