920-245/345 Introductory Portuguese 2 P-1/3 P-1

Prerequisite/s:

Available to second or post-second year students who have passed, with an H3 or better, in another Romance language such as Spanish 1 or 2 or an approved equivalent.

Contact:

Four hours per week: one 1-hour lecture, one 1-hour tutorial and one 2-hour practical language class

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should:

  • be able to carry out a basic conversation in Portuguese;

  • be able to comprehend and produce simple written text; and

  • have a mastery of a reasonable range of grammatical structures.

Content:

This subject is a practical introduction to the Portuguese language (in its Brazilian variety) and to Portuguese and Brazilian culture. The student will acquire the language through a range of activities: language laboratory exercises, computer aided tasks, role play in small groups and pairs and the study of a wide spectrum of audio, video and written materials.

Assessment:

Aural comprehension and transcription exercises (15%); reading performance and comprehension (10%); oral production (15%); written exercises (30%); one 2-hour written exam (30%).
