920-104 Spanish 1B-1: Introduction to Practical Spanish

Five hours per week: one 1-hour lecture and 4-hours of practical classes

Content:

This is a practical introduction to the Spanish language. The student acquires the language largely in genuine or simulated real-life situations (a communicative approach to language learning), rather than through instruction in grammar and translation. Throughout the semester, cultural aspects of the Hispanic world are introduced through the language classes.

Assessment:

End of semester 1.5-hour written test (30%); course work consisting of tests and written exercises (20%); and oral work (50% - reading performance and comprehension 10%; oral summaries of written and audiovisual materials 10%; production and presentation to role dialogue 10%; general conversation 10%; transcription exercises 5%; pronunciation exercises 5%).
