191-336/436 What Works in Criminal Justice

This subject will be offered on an intensive basis 9.00am to 5.00pm each day over one week (24 - 28 February 1997)

Subject Description:

How effective are criminal justice interventions in changing individual behaviour, reducing opportunities for crime and increasing public safety? The course examines the research evidence about the effectiveness and impacts of selected policies, and methodologies of evaluation. Case studies may include: gun control, regulating drug use, dangerous offenders, controlling organised crime and the effectiveness of punishment.

Assessment:

Up to 5000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
