191-335/435 Drugs and Justice

A 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour seminar per week

Subject Description:

Drugs, crime and criminology: asking the right questions; patterns of drug use; theories of drug use; the social construction and meaning of drug use; drugs, health and society; drugs, crime and society; a modern history of drug control; reducing supply: law enforcement; reducing demand: treatment and education; the costs of drug control; comparative drug control regimes; the legalisation debate; some realities in drug control reform.

Assessment:

Up to 5000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
