191-326/426 Violence and the Nation State

Prerequisite/s:

3rd year: Any two second-level criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.

Contact:

One 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar per week.

Content:

The subject examines the role of the nation-state in promoting, regulating and carrying out violence. Case studies may include the white settlement of Australia, the Holocaust, the slave trade and corporal punishment in schools.

Assessment:

Up to 5000 words written work at 3rd year level and 6000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
