Subject Description: | An examination of sentencing law, the sentencing process, the purposes of and justifications for sentences, judicial discretion and sentencing guidelines, and the nature and effectiveness of the sentencing options available to the courts; an introduction to research into sentencing. As a result of this material students should understand the nature of sentencing and be able to evaluate research into the sentencing process. | |
Assessment: | Up to 5000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work. | |
