191-202/302 Crime and Public Policy

Normally 25 points of first-year Criminology. It is also recommended that this course be taken at the third year level.

Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial per week

Subject Description:

Review attempts in Australia to apply criminological theory in policy contexts. Reform issues covered include public drunkenness, family violence, workplace harm and other white collar crime, illicit drunkenness and the sex industry. Emphasis is on making students aware of the relevance of broader social theory (e.g., feminism, Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Foucault and Habermas) for understanding contemporary controversies and debates.

Assessment:

Up to 5000 words of written work. An examination of up to two hours may be substituted for part of the written work.
