175-414 Advanced Topics in the Applied Linguistics of English

Prerequisite/s:

Completion of a major in English Language with grades averaging at least H2A. Subjects offered under this rubric may, in some years, have specific prerequisites from among the English Language electives, e. g. Second Language Learning and Teaching; Approaches to Discourse.

Three hours of lectures/seminars per week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students will have gained an advanced level of understanding of a specific area of interest in applied linguistics.

Content:

A course of advanced lectures dealing with a specific area of interest in the applied linguistics of English, whose topic may vary from year to year, given by members of the department or visiting scholars. Typical topics: issues in second language learning and teaching, first or second language acquisition, English language literacy and the analysis of spoken and written discourse.

Assessment:

Not more than 6000 words in written work.
