175-240/340 Computational Linguistics

Prerequisite/s:

175-241/341 Natural Language OR at least one core 2nd/3rd year linguistics subject. Students are encouraged to take 175-215/315 Formal Syntax beforehand or concurrently.

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should be able to:

  • demonstrate familiarity with current frameworks for approaching the types of application covered in the subject, and the major historical developments leading up to them;

  • demonstrate an awareness of the specific conceptual and practical issues and difficulties of the types of applications covered in the subject;

  • design simple computer programs to solve the kinds of language processing problems considered in the subject.

Content:

A project-based introduction to techniques and issues in computational linguistics.

Assessment:

Assignments, essays and projects, totalling 5000 words.
