175-203/303 English Language Literacy

Subject Description:

This subject aims to give a broad introduction to the issue of literacy. The course looks broadly at literacy in terms of social and cultural practices, including what literacy is, the major historical issues in literacy, the effects of literacy on thought, the development of writing systems, the political dimensions of literacy, and literacy in particular contexts (such as Australian Aboriginal concerns, global media, hypertext and computers, practices at home and school, and gender).

Assessment:

Six pieces of homework and one essay, totalling not more than 5000 words.
