Content: | This subject takes as its starting point the 'culturalist' turn in contemporary political economy. It examines various analyses which maintain the key importance of cultural robustness and social capital for social and economic prosperity. These forms of analysis will be contextualised and interrogated in two ways. Firstly, we will explore how these forms of analysis fit into the traditions of political economic thought, with special attention to the problem of commerce and social virtue. Secondly, we will investigate how these models of 'success' fare in the face of some recent developments in the theory of modernisation. | |
