166-131 Sociology 1B: Social Structure Action and Analysis

Content:

This subject builds on Sociology 1A, involving a more systematic introduction to basic sociological orientations, with particular reference to ways sociological approaches engage with the social actor. Durkheim, Weber and Marx are introduced, as sociologists of systems, rational action and conflict. Contemporary analyses of these areas are introduced, with reference to interpretative sociological approaches to domains of experience including subcultures, social movements, the body and identity. The subject involves a fieldwork exercise to explore these approaches.

Assessment:

A fieldwork report of 1000 words; a 1-hour class test and a 2000 word essay.
