161-434 Authorities: Epistemology and Metaphysics

Subject Description:

One or more works of great philosophers of the past dealing with problems of epistemology and/or metaphysics will be studied in depth. This will provide students with the ability to interpret a major text from the history of philosophy, to critically compare and assess conflicting interpretations of a text, and to discuss a text from the history of philosophy in the light of current philosophical problems, arguments and theories.

Assessment:

One 3-hour end-of-semester examination. An alternative assessment by up to 4000 words of essay-work (either during the semester or as a take-away examination) may be permitted; students unable to complete this essay by the due date will be required to sit the examination. Students will be advised in the first week of the subject if this option is available.
