One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Subject Description:

A study of arguments leading to apparently irresoluble contradictions in metaphysics, logic, and theories of belief and action, and of attempts to resolve them, leading to an appreciation of the relevance of (sometimes foolish-seeming) paradoxes to theories in various fields.

Assessment:

Two essays, one of no more than 2000 words (40%) and one of no more than 3000 words 60%).
