161-210/310 Great Thinkers in Moral Philosophy

Prerequisite/s:

One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Subject Description:

A critical study of four of the classic works of moral philosophy: Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Hume's Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, and Mill's Utilitarianism. Students should acquire the competence and understanding necessary to achieve an accurate and reliable assessment of four of the most significant and influential texts in moral philosophy; and to appreciate what is distinctive and of abiding interest in these texts.

Assessment:

One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 %) and an essay of no more than 3000 words each (50 %).
