158-245/345 Japanese Popular Culture

Subject Description:

This subject introduces students of Japanese language to various elements of Japanese popular culture as well as the academic approaches taken when looking at popular culture. The subject is divided into three general sections: 1) the history of popular culture in Japan; 2) an examination of the various media of popular culture including popular literature, manga (comics), magazines, newspapers, television and film, and music; 3) understand the relationship between popular cultural phenomena and society in general, including a discussion of popular culture as both a product and a determinant of national and gender identity.

Assessment:

Not more than 5000 words of written work. Class participation will also be assessed. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examinations.
