158-207/307 Chinese Linguistics

Subject Description:

A linguistic approach to Chinese. In this subject students will learn how to apply the principles of general and social linguistics to the analysis of Chinese; analyse some major linguistic characteristics of Chinese in the areas of phonology, morphology and syntax; conduct investigations on Chinese dialects; and transcribe Chinese material using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Assessment:

One written examination (2 hours); assignments not exceeding 2000 words; homework not exceeding 1000 words.
