Subject Description:

A course in basic Japanese. Students will learn basic daily conversation. They will be expected to learn the two kana syllabaries and to read materials using these syllabaries. Students will also be introduced to 75 Chinese characters.

Assessment:

Assignments and quizzes totalling not more than 3500 words (1st year level) or 2500 words (2nd year level) in written work; one 2-hour written examination; two short oral/aural perception tests (maximum 30 minutes). Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examinations.
