150-433 Supervised Reading in Indonesian/Malaysian Studies

Prerequisite/s:

Students must be enrolled in the Indonesian Honours Program or in Islamic Studies/Asian Studies and knowledge of Indonesian is required. Enrolment in the subject is subject to approval of the Coordinator. Students should note that approval of a course of reading will be subject to availability of staff with expertise in the field concerned.

1-hour a fortnight seminar and 9 hours contract reading per week

Subject Description:

Islam in Southeast Asia, Indonesian linguistics, modern Indonesian and Malay literature, modern Indonesian history and politics, Indonesian anthropology. Students will learn (1) to undertake independent research in Indonesian and Malaysian studies in areas of interest to them for which supervision is available, and (2) to present the findings of their research in a scholarly manner.

Assessment:

Written work totalling 6000 words.
