150-212/312 Modern Arab World: Society and Culture

Subject Description:

This subject is taught in English and is an introduction to the history of Arab civilisation and modern Arab society with particular emphasis on issues of identity, social structures and institutions and the dynamics of Arab culture. It will cover issues such as (a) the historical roots of Arabs and Arab society; (b) the relationship between Arabism and Islam; (c) issues of Arab identity, diversity and integration; (d) basic characteristics of Arab society; social classes and Arab family; (e) the role and function of religion in Arab society; (f) the social context of Arab politics; (g) literary orientations and Arab thought; and (h) the crisis in modern Arab society and the future of Arab society.

Assessment:

1 essay of not more than 2000 words, 2 class presentation of not more than 2000 words, 1 take-home test of not more than 1000 words.
