150-211/311/411 Business Arabic

Advanced Arabic 1 Part A or equivalent.

Two hour language seminars per week.

Subject Description:

An introduction to Modern Standard Arabic as used in business. This will cover issues/tasks such as (a) relaying information to others in the target language (in face-to-face situations or by telephone); (b) the style and conventions of Arabic business letter, memos and short reports; (c) writing Arabic business letters, memos, notices, short reports using commonly used technical terms of accounting, banking, finance, trade and commerce; (d) reading and understanding annual financial statements of business organisations in Arabic; (e) interpreting and presenting orally and in writing in Arabic selected business related information from newspapers, reference books, yearbooks, directories and annual reports; (f) translating simple correspondence; and (g) the cultural context of the world of business in the Arab World.

Assessment:

Written assignments of not more than 2000 words, not more than 2-hours of written examination, and not more than 15 minutes of aural/oral test. In addition to these 4th year students should write an essay of not more than 1000 words. Weighting of assessment components will be made known at commencement of the unit.
