150-169/269/369/469 Reading the Past: Katharevousa

Subject Description:

Familiarisation with the distinctive phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary of Katharevousa documents and literature; comparison with standard Modern Greek. Students enrolled in 150-169 will also study the socio-cultural context and historical background to contemporary usage.

Assessment:

150-169: Regular written language work up to 2000 words (30 %); one essay up to 2000 words (25 %); and a 2-hour written examination (45 %). 150-269/369: Regular written language work up to 2,750 words (40%); mid-semester class test (30 minutes, 5%) and a 2-hour written examination (50%). 150-469: Regular written language work up to 2000 words and one project up to 2000 words (70%); and a 2-hour written examination (30%).
