Subject Description: | An introduction to spoken and written Arabic language as well as culture for students with little or no knowledge of Arabic. On completion of the subject, students will have acquired: (a) command a spoken facility at a basic level in Modern Standard Arabic; (b) command the ability to read and understand simple Arabic texts ranging from newspaper ads and timetables, road signs etc. to simple stories within a vocabulary range of 200 - 400 most commonly used words in Arabic; (c) have acquired some basic grammatical structures of Arabic language; (d) have the ability to write simple journal entries relating to the themes focused on in the semester; and (e) have acquired a familiarity with some important Arab cultural habits and traditions. | |
Assessment: | Written assignments in total not more than 2000 words, one 2-hour written examination and an aural/oral test of not more than 15 minutes. Weighting of assessment components will be made known at the commencement of the unit. | |
