145-132/232 Technical Communication (Spoken Focus)

Credit Points:

12.5 1st year, 16.7 2nd year

Prerequisite/s:

This subject is designed primarily for native speakers of English and is open to students from all University Faculties. Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on the IELTS or the UTESL equivalent.

Three hours of combined lecture and tutorial classes each week for one semester

Subject Description:

Technical communication skills (the presentation of information for the purpose of assisting a particular audience to understand a subject or carry out a task), with a strong focus on speaking. Students will be introduced to basic principles for delivering successful oral presentations, using appropriate audio-visual and electronic aids, giving clear demonstrations involving instructions or process description, and effectively participating in group decision making and formal meetings. Consideration will also be given to the basic principles of logic, argumentation and persuasion. Students will be given instruction in the use of word processing, spreadsheets and presentational software in support of oral and written communication.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment on class and homework tasks, major oral presentations and writing assignments, all equivalent to 5000 words.
