145-131/231 Communication Skills (Written Focus)

Credit Points:

12.5 1st year, 16.7 2nd year

Prerequisite/s:

This subject is designed primarily for native speakers of English and is open to students from all University Faculties. Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on the IELTS or the UTESL equivalent.

Contact:

Three hours of combined lecture and tutorial classes each week for one semester. The subject is offered in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2.

Subject Description:

General academic communication skills with applications for workplace communication and a strong focus on writing. Students will be introduced to basic principles of structure and style in the preparation of effective written communication. Consideration will be given to various forms of writing, including argumentative essays, research reports, electronic memos and workplace documents. Students will also be given instruction in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and library and online resources for gathering information in support of written and oral communication.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment on class and homework tasks, major writing assignments, and an oral presentation, all equivalent to 5000 words.
