Prerequisite/s: | This subject is designed primarily for native speakers of English and is open to students from all University Faculties. Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on the IELTS or the UTESL equivalent. | |
Contact: | Three hours of combined lecture and tutorial classes each week for one semester. The subject is offered in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2. | |
Subject Description: | General academic communication skills with applications for workplace communication and a strong focus on speaking. Students will be introduced to basic principles for delivering successful oral presentations, using appropriate audio-visual and electronic aids, and participating effectively in group discussions. Consideration will be given to the basic principles of logic, argumentation and persuasion. Students will also be introduced to the use of word processing, spreadsheets, presentational software, and library and online resources for gathering information in support of oral and written communication. | |
Assessment: | Continuous assessment on class and homework tasks, major oral presentations, and writing assignments, all equivalent to 5000 words. | |
