145-122 Language Approaches To Australian Literature

12.5 1st year

Prerequisite/s:

All applicants will be required to sit for a selection test to determine their level of language proficiency before they are able to enrol in this subject. Students who are native speakers of English or whose language proficiency is near-native are not eligible to enrol.

Two one-and-a-half hour language classes

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should be able to:

  • demonstrate increased confidence in using language in a range of communicative contexts:

  • demonstrate improvement in their reading and written skills in English;

  • demonstrate a heightened knowledge of and sensitivity to the English language and to Australian culture;

  • show improved interpretative skills.

Content:

This subject focuses on the linguistic and cultural features used in a variety of texts from Australian literature. The subject aims to develop an awareness of how these features work to produce meaning in the texts. Techniques used include summary, paraphrase, cloze, rewriting for another medium or genre, creative writing and text completion.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment of oral and written work of not more than 2000 words; one text analysis of 1000 words; one written project of 1000 words; one ten-minute oral presentation.

Reading Packs (short stories, drama and poetry) and details of other texts are available from the ESL Program (Centre for Communication Skills & ESL), 151 Barry Street, Carlton.
