136-449 Scepticism, Fallibilism and Relativism

Final honours standing in either History and Philosophy of Science or Philosophy.

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • have a critical understanding of advanced topics in the theory of scientific knowledge;

  • be familiar with the current literature on epistemological relativism.

Content:

Examination of foundational issues in the epistemology of science involving study of selected works from such key figures as Sextus Empiricus, Descartes, Hume, Popper, Kuhn and Feyerabend. The principal theme of the subject will be: the arguments for and the connections between epistemological scepticism, fallibilism and relativism.

Assessment:

One 5000 word research essay.
