One 2-hour discussion class weekly

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should develop:

  • an understanding of the differences between various approaches to the history of science;

  • an understanding of the varying motives which encourage historians to see their subject from different perspectives;

  • a familiarity with (and critical appreciation of) leading methodological debates in the discipline.

Content:

A critical survey of the varied attitudes taken by different historians to the writing of the history of science.

Assessment:

Written work not exceeding 5000 words in total. To be eligible for assessment, students must attend a minimum of 75% of classes.
