Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • be familiar with the main lines of development of science in Australia since 1788, and with the social and institutional factors that have shaped its development;

  • be able to critically assess relevant historical source material;

  • be aware of current historiographical debates about the establishment of science in countries like Australia.

Content:

Selected themes in the history of Australian science since the first European contacts.

Assessment:

Written work of up to 4000 words and a final 3-hour examination.

Prescribed Texts:

Reading guides and booklist issued by the Department.
