136-172 Anthropology 1: Varieties of Human Experience

Two hours of lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week. Regular attendance and contribution to discussion in tutorials is expected

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • have a general understanding of the social and cultural basis of human experience;

  • have a general familiarity with the range of world-views documented in ethnographic literature;

  • have a background of relevant ethnographic knowledge on which to base further anthropological studies.

Content:

An introduction to the anthropological study of religion, symbolism, language and gender, with an emphasis on the descriptive analysis of particular societies and cultures.

Assessment:

Written work of up to 3000 words for the semester and a 1-hour class test.
