136-171 Anthropology 1: Social Order and Social Change

Two hours of lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week. Regular attendance and contribution to discussion in tutorials are expected

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • understand the basic arguments for and critiques of cultural relativism;

  • understand the significance of biological evolution for explaining human social behaviour;

  • have a general familiarity with the range of forms of social structure and social organisation to be found in ethnographic literature;

  • have a general understanding of the conditions under which social change occurs;

  • have a background of relevant ethnographic knowledge on which to base further anthropological studies.

Content:

An introduction to the anthropological study of forms of human behaviour and social organisation and social change, with an emphasis on the descriptive analysis of particular societies and cultures.

Assessment:

Written work of up to 3000 words for the semester and a 1-hour class test.
